21A - Reading Reflection #2
1) The book I chose for this assignment is The Art of Social Media: Power Tips for Power Users. The general theme of the book is that you can use social media to enhance and grow your business or even your personal brand. Kawasaki encourages using the many social media platforms, which we have already integrated into our everyday lives, and posting with a purpose in order to add value to that business or brand. When posting and using social media you are encouraged to consider your audience and how they will receive your message. The book also conveys the importance of treating your social media as a business and come up with ways to make yourself stand out from the billions of others.
2) I think this book significantly enhanced my learning of entrepreneurship in ENT3003! In this course we are asked to market not only our products but ourselves. A huge part of that is intertwined with the way we connect with others through technology and social media. This book emphasized the importance of that personal branding and how easy it can be to make important connections and promote your brand through social media, if used properly.
3) If I had to design an exercise for this class, based on The Art of Social Media it would include the use of popular apps like Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. The assignment would demonstrate the student's ability to market themselves via these social media platforms and grades would be based on the amount of followers the students could reach and how well they were able to promote their personal brand or product within a certain period of time.
4) When I read in the book that "The biggest daily challenge of social media is finding enough content to share" it caught my attention. With billions of people using the same apps, it isn't too shocking to find out that creating new and interesting content for your viewers can be difficult. However, when you see a post, ad or even photo go viral on social media, you never really stop to think about the effort that may have gone in to creating it. Successful content creators succeed in promoting their brand because of the effort they put in to tailoring their content to their audience and coming up with new and creative ideas.
Hi Kristen!
ReplyDeleteI really liked this post. I appreciated your connection between social media and promoting ourselves as entrepreneurs, as I think that that is almost as important as promoting our products. Furthermore, I think the assignment you suggested sounds really fun, and I think that you should suggest it for future classes. Overall, great job! Maybe, you could search and learn about the different types of content out there that you can post? This would help the issue you mentioned in #4.
Hi Kristen,
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job on this exercise. I think your reflection was well thought out and insightful, and you make the book seem like a very valuable read. I think it's so important to harness the power of social media as new entrepreneurs. It seems like this book gave you a lot of insight on how to do that! I agree that it's essential to differentiate yourself in the social media world. When I think about why I follow people that I don't already have a connection with, it's almost always because they offer some type of unique content.
Hey Kristen, you did a good job summarizing and reflecting on the book. The use of social media for marketing was also covered in the book I read, Inbound Marketing, but very briefly. One exercise I came up with for my book, creating a mock social media marketing page, is similar to yours. It sounds like the book goes much deeper into ideas about social media use though and warrants a whole book on the topic.
